Make mine a whisky-and-water!
(111 miles [178 km])

Here’s an itinerary that combines the whisky-distilling country of Moray and visits the upper reaches of both the Spey and Don by using the famous mountain road across the Lecht.

From Elgin, head east on the A96 for Fochabers (Baxters Highland Village, antiques, shopping, museum, garden centre) and continue to Keith (Strathisla Distillery, Scottish Tartans Museum). Continue on to Huntly (castle, local museum).

Take the A97 south towards Rhynie (Leith Hall signposted) and Lumsden (Scottish Scupture Workshop), continuing on the A944 for Kildrummy (castle) and Strathdon (fine views of the Don).

Take the A939 via Corgarff (castle) and the 2000-feet-plus Lecht Road (Lecht Ski Centre) to Tomintoul (museum). Travel north on the B9008 by Tomnavoulin and Glenlivet (distillery, walks), then on to the B9009 through Glenrinnes (fine views) for Dufftown (secondhand book shop, museum, Glenfiddich Distillery, Keith & Dufftown Railway, Mortlach Church, Balvenie Castle).

Join the A941 for Craigellachie (cooperage, historic Telford bridge), and continue north for Rothes (Glen Grant Distillery and garden) and back to Elgin via Millbuies country park.
