Scolty Hill (4 miles [7 km])
The tower erected in 1842 to remember General William
Burnett provides a landmark for Banchory, and a fine target
for a simple walk. Walk or drive from the centre of town down
Dee Street to the bridge over the Dee, then after 100m turn
sharp right up the road signed Auchattie. After 500m, turn
left at the junction (signposted "Scolty Hill"),
and watch out for the track branching off to the right 150m
ahead. Continue up the track through a gate. Watch out for
a narrow steep path to the left. This leads directly up to
the monument.

General Burnett was a veteran of the Napoleonic Wars,
and much liked in the neighbourhood. This monument to
his memory was restored locally for the 150th anniversary
of the building of the tower in 1992, and inaugurated
by the Prince of Wales. |
