Early on we were 'assigned' to Joyce Irvine who was our main point of contact. Having one individual to communicate with for the research part was extremely important. We immediately started our request for information regarding Leonard's DOB and within a month, we were emailed all of the details. The certified copy from the Registrar would arrive by mail a week or so later.

Joyce's research indicated that Leonard Hutton Cruickshank Horne was born on June 17, 1908 at 2 Victoria Buildings, Bankhead, Newhills, Scotland. Mother's name listed as Elizabeth Edwards Horne, father's name not listed. This was bittersweet information; it confirmed that Elizabeth was the mother but it did not tell us who the father was.

Ada recalled her mother Elizabeth telling her that she had been very much in love with a man named 'Hutton'. Unfortunately he went off to fight in the Great War (WWI) and was killed. I asked Joyce to check for death records for military personnel and she was able to find one that was close, Lorne De Hutton. Was this man Leonard's father? We will never really know for sure.

After Leonard left for the USA, his mother met a man by the name of William George Murray Skinner. Together they had 3 children, 2 sons and 1 daughter: Edward William, Robert Alexander, and Ada. And on July 10, 1921 they immigrated to the United States of America through the Port of Ellis Island. The vessel's manifest lists their final destination as: "Alexander Horn, 184 Ellen St, Holyoke, Mass". It was really Elm Street not Ellen, but nonetheless after 7 years Leonard was going to finally be reunited with his mother, and Elizabeth would be reunited with her father and son.

As far as we can tell, the arrival of Elizabeth, William and their children marked the end of the immigration of Alexander's family to the USA. Alexander & Jane's other children came over earlier. The families primarily settled in the Western Massachusetts and Florida areas.
