It was
around late August of 2001 that I started to look into
my wife's family history.
My wife's grandfather, Leonard
Hutton Cruickshank Horne, came to the USA in 1914 from
Scotland, on the SS Numidian, when he was just about
to turn 6. He made the trip with 3 other family members
- his grandfather Alexander Horne Sr., his grandmother,
Jane (Cruickshank) Horne, and his cousin John Horne,
10. Leonard left his single mother back home with hopes
of being reunited with her in the near future. The group's
final destination was the city of Holyoke, MA.
We had
an interest in confirming Leonard's date of birth, as
well as his connection to the rest of the family. The
only information that we had was from an older family
member by the name of Ada, who is currently living in
Florida. She was in fact Leonard's half-sister - they
shared the same mother, Elizabeth Horne. My mother in-law,
Leonard's daughter, grew up believing that Elizabeth
was her grandmother, but she was never told who Leonard's
real father was.
I contacted
the Registrar of Births, Deaths, & Marriages in
Aberdeen. The staff there recommended that I contact
the Aberdeen & North-East Scotland Family History
Society (ANESFHS), and I emailed them at the end of
August 2001.
I was
contacted in early September with information on how
to become a member of the ANESFHS. After some careful
consideration on our part the decision was made to join
for a 15-month period for the exceptionally reasonable
price of $32USD. I received my membership notice on
October 13th. continue>>
