The Tap O' Noth
The vitrified fort on the 1851 ft summit (563m) of Tap
o Noth above Rhynie makes this short 3-mile walk both
a pleasant outing and a guide to how our earliest ancestors
lived. From the car park on the A941, head up on the track.
The
path negotiates a stile, rough pasture, a wood, and
another stile, while at the same time appearing to head
away from the hill. But simply follow the track all
the way to the summit, where there is the astonishing
sight of a fortified enclosure the size of a football
pitch.
On a good
day, the view from the top takes in The Bin at Cullen
on the Moray Coast. The terrain throughout is good,
though strong footwear is recommended.
The name
of this unusual hill comes from tap, something rising
above the head of an object, and naoidh, watching or
guarding.
